Being Forest Positive offers a disproportionate impact.
We support the Tanoe-Ehy Forest on the South-Eastern Ivory Coast, West Africa, covering 10,817 Hectares. An area that contributes 123,462 Tonnes annual CO2, captured and stored.
Working with the eleven villages that collectively own and govern their forest for conservation, Openshaw & Co.’s funding through FCF in 2024 helped contribute towards activities including:
• Monthly patrols to protect the forest from illegal logging (confiscation of illegal planks), encroachment, and hunting risks, including a joint patrol with Ghanaian stakeholders, as Tanoé-Ehy is connected to Ghanaian forests across the river.
• Biomonitoring activities, including recruiting and training new eco guards and conducting drone and camera trap surveys to assess the habitat of Miss Waldron’s Colobus monkey. Biomonitoring also included a reptile training session and the deployment of camera traps in the search for Miss Waldron’s Colobus monkey, utilising drones and environmental DNA analysis.
• Agroforestry activities, including engaging eleven villages to establish a six-kilometre hedgerow in farmlands on the periphery of the forest. Approximately 5,000 plants were introduced to 400 hectares of local farmland. The Dohouan research station nursery was expanded to accommodate 10,000 seedlings, and an arboretum was created at the Nouamou secondary school.
• Awareness raised of the need for forest protection among communities and foster positive attitude changes. In collaboration with the NGO ACB-CI, a tour was organised, reaching more than 1,000 people. In August, a public video screening evening and a Maracana (football) tournament were held in Dohouan, Nouamou, and Kotoagnuan.
