Introduction to

Patents

Our team of European and UK patent attorneys provides world-class assistance in securing intellectual property and patent protection across a wide range of sciences and technologies, helping support a broad spectrum of clients from a myriad of industries, from SMEs to global corporations.

We have a passion for invention and support our clients in turning their ideas into reality.  Many of our attorneys began their careers within industry as scientists or engineers, generating and managing IP, before training to become qualified Patent Attorneys.   Some of our team are even inventors in their own right, having personally followed the patent path.  This client-side experience gives us a valuable perspective, deep understanding, and appreciation that enables us to engage and support our clients throughout the patent process.

Our expert patent professionals have not only an intimate understanding of technologies and innovations but also a comprehensive knowledge of the law.  We craft high-quality patent applications that, when combined with our experience of navigating global patent offices and procedures, lead to the successful grant of strong, defensible patents for our clients worldwide.

Openshaw & Co. is proud to have a highly skilled and diverse team that supports invention across fields such as engineering, telecommunications, aerospace, electronics, medical devices, photonics, computer-implemented inventions, quantum computing, Edge, IoT, AR, VR, AI, ML and software.  We have a specialist team covering chemistry, with significant experience in areas such as material science, alloys and metallurgy, coatings, lubricants, and chemical engineering.

We provide a comprehensive end-to-end patenting service covering all stages, leading to the successful grant of defensible, enforceable patents in jurisdictions around the world.

We have extensive experience working directly with the European Patent Office (EPO), securing European patents (EP) under the European Patent Convention (EPC), covering national rights including in Germany, France, and the UK.  We acquire Unitary Patents (UP) through the EPO, providing coverage across 18 European Union (EU) states.

We also work extensively with clients to secure national patent rights in the UK, engaging directly with the UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO).

We support our clients with first-filing strategies directly in the UK or directly at the EPO, and handle the filing of international (PCT) applications and subsequent European regional phase and national phase entries in the UK and elsewhere.

Through our trusted partner network, we support clients with their IP protection across other jurisdictions, including major markets such as the US, Canada, China, Brazil, India, South Korea, Japan and Australia.
