David is a seasoned UK and European Chartered Patent Attorney with more than 20 years’ experience in the intellectual property profession, specialising in the protection and commercialisation of advanced technology across diverse sectors, including engineering, defence and security, energy, medical devices, telecommunications, software, computing and semiconductors, artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML), and deep tech innovations.
David began his career in engineering, working in the defence and security sector, where he developed a deep appreciation for rigorous technical problem-solving and innovation in highly complex environments. This early experience as an engineer laid the foundation for a career at the intersection of technology and law, driving his transition into intellectual property and patent strategy.
Qualifying as both a UK and European Patent Attorney, David has spent the past two decades advising a wide range of clients, from disruptive start-ups and SMEs to global corporates, on the strategic protection of their inventions and the management of high-value patent portfolios. His practice spans drafting and prosecuting patent applications before the UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO) and the European Patent Office (EPO), advising on opposition and validity issues, and formulating robust IP strategies tailored to the needs of technology-intensive businesses.
David’s technical specialisms include telecommunications and standard-essential patents (SEPs), software and computer-implemented inventions, AI/ML systems, and deep tech applications where the boundaries of patentability frequently evolve. His deep engagement with software, AI and machine learning patent issues, including commentary on evolving case law and strategy, underscores his role at the forefront of legal developments in these fast-moving fields.
