European Union Trade Marks (EUTM)

As the world’s single largest trading bloc and top trading partner for 80 countries, the EU ranks first globally in both inbound and outbound investments and is the largest trader of manufactured goods and services.  Consequently, securing European trade mark protection in this market is essential for many clients.

Securing trade mark protection in the EU can be achieved by submitting a single application to the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), which can include as many classes of goods/services as required for a single set of fees.

An EUTM is a unitary right, meaning that it covers all member states of the European Union, providing wide geographical coverage across this important trading bloc. As English continues to be a working language, applications can be made without the need for local language translations. Additionally, this is a single application that covers all EU countries simultaneously for one set of fees, making it very cost-efficient compared with filing individually per country.

Following Brexit, an EUTM application no longer covers the UK, so a separate application to the UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO) is required to secure UK rights.
